BANGOR, Maine — Public safety personnel pulled the body of an elderly woman from the waters of Kenduskeag Stream on Monday morning, shortly before the beginning of the Memorial Day parade.

The death of the woman, whose name is being withheld pending notification of her family,  is under investigation by the Bangor Police Department and the State Medical Examiner’s Office. According to a statement from the Bangor Police Department, the woman’s death does not appear to be suspicious.

Emergency personnel in a rubber raft could be seen in Kenduskeag Stream below the bridge shortly after 10 a.m. Numerous spectators in town for the parade watched from the bridge and along shore. As the raft headed downstream, a shrouded human body could be seen in the raft.

Crews came to shore and lifted the body, still covered, onto a stretcher at a dock behind the Sea Dog Brewing Co. restaurant on the Penobscot River.

Police spokesman Sgt. Paul Edwards said Monday afternoon that further information about the woman’s identity and how she died is unlikely until Tuesday.
