BANGOR, Maine — Two men were indicted Wednesday by the Penobscot County grand jury on charges of robbery, assault and attempted theft in connection with an April 17 incident in Bangor.

Jacob Hurd, 22, of Charleston and Matthew Gormely, 24, of Bangor were riding with Connie Toothaker, 21, of Carmel in her truck when the two men allegedly attacked a 28-year-old man who had called an unidentified female passenger and asked for a ride to the store at about 9 p.m.

Shortly after the victim got into Toothaker’s truck, it pulled over and the victim got out to let a passenger out, according to Bangor police.

“[The victim] said he was attacked by the men in the truck and that they attempted to take property from his person but [were] unsuccessful,” Sgt. Paul Edwards said last month. “The truck then sped off,” leaving the victim with some bumps and scratches.

“There was some attempt to go through his pockets but they never got his wallet,” he added.

An unidentified man followed the truck and helped police find it.

The vehicle was stopped by Officer Tim Shaw on the corner of Birch and Pearl streets, where Toothaker, Hurd and Gormely were arrested around 9:45 p.m. Toothaker was charged with operating after suspension and bail violation, both misdemeanors.

Since their arrests, the three have been released on bail from the Penboscot County Jail, according to jail personnel.

The second woman in the vehicle was not charged, Edwards said last month.
