Ellsworth woman charged with attempted murder in Bangor fire

BANGOR, Maine — An Ellsworth woman has been arrested and charged with assault and attempted murder in connection with a fire in a home on outer Broadway which severely injured an elderly woman on Friday.

According to a press release from Sgt. Paul Edwards of the Bangor Police Department, Emily Cole, 25, of Ellsworth was arrested Saturday on charges of aggravated assault and attempted murder. The burns received by the victim were caused intentionally and with the use of accelerants, the press release stated late Saturday afternoon.  

The Bangor Police Department received a call regarding a fire at about 4 p.m. Friday. An elderly female was taken to Eastern Maine Medical Center with severe burns on her upper body, a police statement indicated on Friday night.

Tim York of the State Fire Marshal’s Office said Saturday that the victim later was transferred to Maine Medical Center in Portland.

Edwards said Friday the incident was being investigated by the Bangor Police Department and

the State Fire Marshal’s Office.  

The fire reportedly was out by the time crews from the Bangor Fire Department arrived.
