PORTLAND, Maine — A Maine man convicted of killing his girlfriend a few weeks after being charged with assaulting her is going to prison for 40 years.

A judge imposed the sentence Thursday on 52-year-old William Hanaman of Portland. Hanaman’s lawyer contends he acted in self-defense on Nov. 11, 2009.

Hanaman testified he didn’t remember stabbing 47-year-old Marion Shea in his Portland apartment. He told jurors he blacked out, then woke up in his truck in a parking lot and saw blood on his pants. Hanaman was unconscious and surrounded by pills when police later found him, along with Shea’s body, in the apartment.

Hanaman had been charged with domestic violence assault and was ordered to stay away from Shea.
