A 19-year-old Pittsfield man is accused of stealing a blue Ford van from town on Friday, then crashing the vehicle in Newport, said Newport Police Chief Leonard Macdaid.

Danny Adams was accompanied by a 17-year-old male friend, and both were caught shortly after 9 p.m., he said.

“They came up to Newport and crashed the car on Spring Street,” Macdaid said. “They took off on foot but were found near the Palmyra Trading Post by state police.”

Adams, who was out on probation, was found with a contusion and cuts on his face from the accident. He was arrested and charged with theft, probation violation, operating a vehicle without a license, leaving the scene of a personal injury accident and a felony charge of receiving stolen property. He was taken to Penobscot County Jail in Bangor and remained there Sunday night, a jail official said.

“We will be checking into possible charges for theft of a firearm,” Macdaid said.

The parents of the male juvenile, who was not charged, were called to pick him up, the chief said. (Nok-Noi Ricker, BDN)
