CAMDEN – Eugene Taylor Pinney, 81, of Camden, died Friday, March 5, 2004, at Penobscot Bay Medical Center in Rockport. Born in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, he was the son of Eugene M. and Alice T. Pinney. He was a graduate of the Western Reserve Academy in Hudson, Ohio. During World War II, he served in the U.S. military as a radio operator on board a B-17 with the 8th Air Force Division in England. Gene graduated with the Class of 1945, from Dartmouth College in Hanover, N.H., and joined the Central Intelligence Agency later that year. In 1954, he married Patricia Wyman in San Francisco, Calif. They had three children. Gene served many posts for the CIA including Washington, D.C., Munich, Germany, Vienna, Austria, Belgrade, Yugoslavia, and Bern, Switzerland. After his retirement in 1973, the Pinney’s moved to Rockport. Mrs. Pinney died in 1980. In 1985, Gene married Judith Campbell Joyce of Camden. Gene was a very active volunteer in many community organizations including the Camden Outing Club, Camden-Rockport Historical Society, Downeast Jazz Society, Maine Coast Artists and Tanglewood 4-H Camp, where he cleared trails and ran cross country events. In 2001, he was the recipient of the Camden-Rockport-Lincolnville Chamber of Commerce Volunteer of the Year Award. Gene was an ardent outdoorsman and enjoyed many activities including fishing, boating, camping and skiing. At the Camden Snow Bowl he gave lessons to skiers of all ages. Gene had a passion for music and played as a drummer in a jazz band in his early years. Gene will be remembered for his incredible story telling abilities and wonderful sense of humor. He is survived by his wife, Judith Pinney of Camden; his three children, Ellen R. Pinney and husband, Keith Sprengel, of Corbett, Ore., Nancy H. Pinney of Portland, Ore., and Thomas W. Pinney and wife, Gabriella, of Santa Cruz, Calif.; four stepchildren, Christopher Joyce and wife, Rebecca, of Yarmouth, Peter Joyce and Elizabeth Smith of Sunnyside, Calif., Melissa Russell and husband, Stephen, of Pownal, and Elizabeth Inniss and husband, Peter, of Falmouth; and eight grandchildren, Wyatt, Phoebe, Rachael, Loren, Sadie, Ella, Molly and Shelby. In addition to his first wife, he was predeceased by his brother, Richard Pinney. A memorial service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, March 13, 2004, at the First Congregational Church in Camden. The Rev. Kevin Pleas will officiate. A reception will be held following the service at the Pinney’s home at 7 Pleasant Ridge Drive, Camden.
