BDN reporter Aislinn Sarnacki and several hiking companions hike the Abol Trail up Katahdin, Maine’s tallest mountain, on Sept. 10, 2016, in Baxter State Park. The Abol Trail was closed to the public in the spring of 2014 because of rock slide activity that made the trail unstable and unsafe for hikers. About 1 mile of the trail was re-routed. This new trail opened in spring of 2016 and is about 0.6 mile longer than the old trail. The Abol Trail leads up Katahdin to the Tableland, where hikers can take Hunt Trail another 1 mile to the summit of the mountain.
