International Women’s Day is celebrated around the world every March 8. It highlights women’s accomplishments in history and celebrates women’s roles in the home, family, politics and society. It’s a holiday not much known in the United States. But a group called Women Around the World in Portland is trying to change that.

On Friday night at the Irish Heritage Center in Portland, the group hosted the fourth annual International Women’s Day Fashion Show. They invited local immigrant women to wear fashions and traditional dress from their native countries and display them on the runway. The night included dance, music and poetry from around the world as well as food from local restaurants and community members who shared dishes from their native countries.

The event highlighted Portland’s growing diversity, with local women from countries including South Sudan, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Djibouti, Rwanda, Iran, South Korea, Canada, Thailand, the Philippines and Liberia taking part.
