Screams, shrieks and calls of “Marco!” “Polo!” heard around neighborhoods can mean only one thing: Summer has arrived in the backyard pools across the state.

Swimming pools are important to many of us. Maine, more known for ice fishing, snowmobiling and skiing, does have a short but stunning summer season. And those willing to invest some time, sweat and a bit of backbreaking labor can erect a small above-ground pool in a few weekends.

Add a hose, chemically balance the water, and let the fun begin.

Be sure to include an inflatable lounger to enjoy the more relaxing aspects of a backyard pool.

For those who are not inclined or don’t have the time to do the necessary ground work, but still want to slip into a refreshing pool of water just after waking on a hot summer morning, give one of several local pool companies a call to see if you can be in the swim by summer’s end.
