Wild blueberry harvest: celebrating 40 years of Maine’s special fruit

Maine is known for its blueberries.

The Machias Wild Blueberry Festival has drawn people Down East to sample pies, jams and arts and crafts for almost 40 years. But behind the festivals and baked good are the blueberry barrens and the people who work them.

For decades, workers have used their hands and rakes to harvest Maine’s sweet crop. And through the years, the Bangor Daily News has captured the harvest in photographs.
