BANGOR, Maine — Junior first baseman Tom Burns belted a pair of triples and a double and drove in four runs and senior right-hander Nolan Webber pitched a complete-game nine-hitter to lead the John Bapst High School Crusaders to an 8-2 win over Mount Desert Island at the Winkin Sports Complex on Thursday.
Bangor-based John Bapst improved to 8-2 in Eastern Maine Class B baseball while MDI fell to 7-5.
Webber stranded 10 baserunners as the Trojans went just 2-for-9 with men in scoring position. He struck out nine and walked three while throwing 121 pitches, 75 for strikes.
Burns’ bases-loaded triple keyed a five-run first inning and Webber stranded two runners in each of the first four innings.
Andy Catlin triggered the decisive first-inning rally with a leadoff infield single to the shortstop hole and Josh Baker grounded a single to center. Shawn Curran walked and Evan Pelkey delivered the first run with a grounder to third on which the throw to the plate was ruled to be a tad late by the home plate umpire.
With the infield drawn in, Burns ripped a sharp grounder to the left of diving shortstop Jon Phelps and it rolled to the fence on the FieldTurf for the triple.
Burns eventually scored on Nick Jordan’s grounder to second.
John Bapst added three unearned runs in the sixth with Pelkey and Burns hitting back-to-back RBI triples.
MDI finally broke through against Webber in the seventh, scoring twice on Ryan Littlefield’s base hit, Phelps’ RBI triple and Keegan McKim’s run-scoring single.
Catlin had two singles for John Bapst.
Phelps tripled and singled for MDI, McKim doubled and singled and Ben Walls singled twice.
Walls pitched a complete game in defeat. He struck out seven, walked two and hit two batters while allowing nine hits. He allowed five earned runs.
