Westbrook Soccer League to host Street Soccer Tourney

WESTBROOK, Maine —  The Westbrook Soccer League will host its inaugural Presumpscot Open Friday through Sunday, June 21-23, at the Cornelia Warren Four Season Rink in Westbrook.

The three-day street soccer tournament, which is believed to be the first of its kind in Maine, will benefit the club’s newly-created Opportunity Fund, a financial-assistance program designed to help expand soccer-playing opportunities for Westbrook’s youth.

The tournament is expected to attract hundreds of youth and adult soccer players from Greater Portland and the Lewiston area. It will kick off Friday night with a free outdoor screening of the 2010 movie “Pelada,” an award-winning documentary about two American collegiate soccer players who travel the globe looking for their next game of pick-up soccer.

The competition begins Saturday afternoon, when boys between the ages 10 and 13 face off. The men’s division provides the nightcap Saturday when they play under the rink’s floodlights in a festive atmosphere complete with what is expected to be a good crowd and music provided by a DJ. The women’s division closes the competition Sunday night.

The event is co-sponsored by the Westbrook Community Center and the Westbrook Historical Society. The Frog and Turtle and Starlite Cafe, two local eateries, have contributed financial prizes for the winning teams in each division.
