Wednesday and Thursday, twelve RSU 19 musical groups participated in the MMEA District V Jazz Festival at Stearns High School in Millinocket. All twelve groups qualified for their respective State Jazz Festivals (Instrumental Festival March 14-15 at Hampden Academy and Vocal Festival March 28-29 at Ellsworth High School), although Nokomis’ “Hairspray” show chorus did not request a rating. This speaks volumes about the talent of our staff and especially our music students in the district!
Somerset and Nokomis Show Chorus “Hairspray” show choirs earned a II rating (Meets the Standard) along with Nokomis’ Jazz Choir “Perception,” Nokomis, Somerset and Sebasticook Jazz Bands. Earning a I rating (Exceeds the Standard) were Nokomis Show Chorus “Broadway,” Jazz Choir “Vision,” Jazz Ensemble, and Jazz Combo, Sebasticook Show Choir, and Etna-Dixmont Jazz Band. Too many of our students received special recognition for their solo work within their individual ensembles to mention. More importantly, all our students and groups received lots of feedback and constructive criticism from other professionals as they work to fine tune their performances in preparation for the state festivals. This is a most valuable educational opportunity for our kids. I’m pleased to see the tradition of musical excellence in RSU 19 is thriving!
