BLUE HILL, Maine — Registration opened March 1 for the Second annual Downeast Spiritual Life Conference to be held Aug. 23-24, at Atlantic Oceanside Hotel and Conference Center in Bar Harbor, Maine.
The theme of this year’s conference is Spirituality in Our Times: Embracing Diversity, Building Community. Primary speakers and workshop leaders Eboo Patel, Muslim director of the Interfaith Youth Corps; writer and Christian religious educator Elizabeth Drescher; and Rabbi Or Rose, director of the Center for Global Judaism at Hebrew College, will help bring religious diversity to life.
In addition to workshops led by the primary speakers, a workshop led by Robert A. Jonas will show how to deepen spiritual experience by practicing aspects of more than one faith tradition (“dual belonging”). Another workshop led by George Emlen, renowned musical director of Revels, will help participants join hearts and build community through song.
New to the conference this year is a one-day spiritual retreat with renowned inter-spiritual educator and author Mirabai Starr. “One Love, A Contemplative Experience” is a celebration of the interconnected wisdom of different spiritual paths. The day will include study of the mystical poetry and sacred scriptures of different traditions, meditative silence, and personal sharing of inter-spiritual experiences.
Also available is a traditional Maine “Chowdah” benefit supper hosted by St. Saviour Episcopal Church in Bar Harbor to support two local food pantries.
The conference will end with a Saturday night fundraising concert performed by Noel Paul Stookey (formerly of the 1960s folk trio, Peter Paul and Mary). His concert, “One & Many: A Musical Village” will incorporate his rich, lyric-driven music and distinctive guitar work with the power of Stookey’s rich baritone voice. The concert is open to the public without conference registration.
