Maine Community Health Options receives certification as a qualified health plan

LEWISTON, Maine — Maine Community Health Options has announced that it has entered into an agreement with CMS to provide health insurance coverage through Qualified Health Plans on the Health Insurance Marketplace. MCHO is poised to be one of the two health insurance issuers in Maine permitted to sell health insurance coverage to Maine people as a Qualified Health Plan Issuer on the federal Health Insurance Marketplace.

“We are very pleased to cross this important threshold in preparation for Open Enrollment on the federal Health Insurance Marketplace beginning October 1st,” stated Kevin Lewis, CEO of MCHO. “With our entry on the Marketplace, we will introduce competition, meaningful benefits, and, in most instances, lower costs for Maine people.”

Insurance issuers seeking to sell Qualified Health Plans on the Health Insurance Marketplace were required to meet both state and federal rate, benefit and network standards by July 31. State review was completed on July 31, and the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services notified issuers last week of their application status.

“The wait is over,” said Lewis. “Our health insurance options provide greater transparency and support for care that matters, at a lower cost. Moreover, with our statewide network of providers, our members can rest easy.”

Maine people who have a household income between 100% and 400% of the federal poverty level or less may be eligible for advanced premium tax credits when they choose a QHP through the Health Insurance Marketplace.

Maine will be one of 26 states that will utilize the federal Health Insurance Marketplace. The remaining 24 states have implemented their own systems or engaged in a state-federal partnership.
