LEWISTON, Maine — Thirty-eight cyclists began making their way on Oct. 3 through snow and below-freezing temperatures and across mountainous terrain from Calgary, Alberta, Canada to Lewiston as part of the annual Cancervive Peloton Project. A public welcome was held Oct. 12, as the spectacle of the Peloton riders and their support vehicles arrived in downtown.
The Peloton Project participants rode the 2,500-mile, 10-day journey in ambassadorship of cancer survivors, dedicating their ride to a cancer “warrior” (someone who has fought or is currently fighting cancer). The destination was The Dempsey Challenge in Lewiston, which raises funds for The Patrick Dempsey Center for Cancer Hope and Healing. The Cancervive Peloton Project team raised $18,345 for the Dempsey Center.
Over the past several weeks, a Maine film crew has been documenting the cyclists and the warriors for a full-length feature film, “The Peloton Project,” with actor Patrick Dempsey, co-founder of the Dempsey Center, as executive producer. Dempsey was on hand to greet the Peloton Team as they arrived in Lewiston and addressed the riders, the warriors, their support teams and families.
“Thank you to the cyclists for your passion for the cause, for the sacrifices you’ve made in order to make this day possible, and for your dedication to training, fundraising and the ride,” Dempsey said. “And a special thank you to the warriors for sharing your stories and for holding on to hope in the face of cancer. You are the heroes of this story and the inspiration that has kept these amazing riders motivated.”
The Cancervive Peleton Project bike excursion featured a group of riders cycling relay-style 24 hours a day for 10 days. The riders, warriors and their support teams went on to participate in The Dempsey Challenge events held Oct. 13-14.
