GORHAM, Maine – Senior Cole Hyla (East Haddam, Conn./Hale-Ray) scored his third goal of the season in the 84th minute to notch the go-ahead goal delivering the 2-1 win for the Western Connecticut State University Colonials 2-1 over the University of Southern Maine Huskies in a Little East Conference men’s soccer game Saturday afternoon at Hannaford Field.
With the win, Western Connecticut keeps its Little East Conference playoff hopes alive pending today’s final results and improves its record to 6-10-1 overall and 4-3 in the Little East. Southern Maine concludes its season with a record of 1-13-3 and 0-7 in the LEC.
Southern Maine scored first notching a goal on its first shot attempt of the game when freshman Austin Farwell (Windham, Maine) blasted a low far-post shot past the outstretched dive of WCSU sophomore Luca DiCarlo (Waterbury, Conn./Holy Cross). Scored in the 31st minute, Farwell scored his first intercollegiate goal off of a through ball from junior Charlie Mull (Portland, Maine/Cheverus).
The Colonials came back to even the score up in the 34th minute when senior Juan Galarza (Danbury, Conn./Danbury) volleyed a ball into the back of the net off of a service from sophomore Robert Della Penna (Suffield, Conn.). The score remained unchanged through the half.
WCSU pressured the Huskies early in the second half, but sophomore goalkeeper Simon Hulbert (Bar Harbor, Maine/Mount Desert Island) was able to keep the Huskies in the game making seven of his eight saves in the second stanza. Hyla finally broke through for the game-winner in the final minutes of regulation when he collected a deflection off of junior Nick Kyriakidis’ (Sleepy Hollow, N.J./Pleasantville) initial shot. Kyriakidis put a bid on frame and Hulbert when to the ground to make the initial save, but the rebound found Hyla for the game-winner.
WCSU’s DiCarlo earned the win in goal making one save. Western outshot USM 19-3 for the game and had a 9-1 lead in corner kicks.
