Thomas Men's college basketball 69 vs University of New England 64

WATERVILLE, ME – The Thomas College men’s basketball team defeated the University of New England, 69-64, in the first day of the Charlie Ryan Classic held at Larry Mahaney Gymnasium.

In the victory, the Terriers improve to 2-0 in the early season while the Nor’easters drop to 0-2.

Neither team allowed double digits in the first nine minutes of the game as both teams struggled to finish shots. The Nor’easters eventually pulled ahead, 13-6, but the Terriers answered with a rally, taking the lead at 16-15.

The teams traded points in the last seven minutes as Drew Coveney finished a layup in the last six seconds of the first for the Nor’easters to go into the locker room trailing Thomas 28-27.

In the second half, the Nor’easters battled back to a 34-30 lead but freshman guard Zach Mackinnon (Kennebunk, Maine / Kennebunk) responded with a three while Simon added four more to regain the lead 37-36 with 15 minutes remaining in the second half.

Mackinnon added a layup in the 12:41 mark and after being fouled on the play. He made the ensuing free throw to bring Thomas up to a 45-41 lead.

In the final minutes, CJ Autry responded with six points while Coveney knocked down a pair of free throws to bring the game within three.

After an attempted three-pointer with 5 seconds remaining in the game, UNE fouled to put Tyheem Simon (Far Rockaway, N.Y. / Lawrenece) on the line for two free throws which gave the Terriers a five-point lead and finished the scoring at 69-64.

Simon led the Terriers with 26 points and six rebounds while Mackinnon added 20 points, going 6-11 from three. Ian King (Westbrook, Maine / Westbrook) chipped in nine assists and three points in the win.

Coveney led the Nor’easters’ offense with 14 points, nine assists. and eight rebounds. Jean-Luc Parker contributed with 10 points, six rebounds and two assists.

The Terriers will face Wheelock College at 1:00p.m. on Saturday, November 19 in their second game of the Charlie Ryan Classic at Larry Mahaney Gymnasium.
