VESTAL, N.Y. – Down to their last out and trailing by a run, Alyssa Derrick blasted a two-run, walk-off home run to lead the Black Bears to a 4-3 victory over Binghamton.

Derrick’s home run, her third of the tournament, advances Maine to the next round where they will take on Stony Brook on Friday at 1:30 p.m.

Laurine German stayed hot at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a pair of runs and has now tallied six hits in tournament play. Meghan Royle added a 2-for-4 day with a home run while Erika Leonard drove in one.

Following a one hour, 40-minute rain delay, Binghamton began the scoring early with a single run in the top of the first. Jillian Bovitt, who reached on a fielder’s choice before advancing to second, came in to score on Kate Richard’s RBI double down the line in left.

The Black Bears had an immediate answer as German started the home half of the first with a base hit flare to right. German stole second before advancing to third on a ground out by Derrick. Leonard followed with a base knock to right, bringing in German to tie the game at 1-1.

Royle broke the tie in the bottom of the third with a towering shot over the left field wall. Royle’s third home run of the season, a solo shot, put the Black Bears on top, 2-1.

A two run top of the fifth regained a one run lead for the Bearcats. Kassidy Seary started the inning by reaching on an error before being lifted in favor of pinch runner Stephanie Ragusa. A sacrifice bunt advanced Ragusa to second before Lauren Martinez dropped a base hit into short right. With runners at first and third, Carrie Maniccia dropped down a bunt which was fielded by Derrick and fired to first for the out. However, the putout allowed Ragusa to come in with the tying run. An RBI single to right from Jessica Rutherford followed as the Bearcats took a 3-2 lead.

Maine loaded the bases and looked to have an answer in the fifth. With one out, German and Royle each singled before Derrick reached on a walk. However, a pair of flyouts allowed Binghamton to escape the jam, maintaining its one run advantage into the sixth.

The game moved into the seventh with the Black Bears still trailing by a run. German drew a one out walk and, following a flyout, Derrick stepped in as the winning run. Faced with their last out, and down to their last strike, Derrick blasted her eighth home run of the season over the fence in center. The walk-off home run lifted Maine to a 4-3 victory.

Annie Kennedy moved to 11-8, picking up the win in relief. Kennedy scattered two hits in 2.1 innings of shutout work to go along with a pair of strikeouts.
