SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine— The Southern Maine Community College men’s soccer team suffered its second Yankee Small College Conference (YSCC) loss to the University of Maine- Machias on Sunday, Oct. 2 by a score of 3-1.

The Clippers scored first in the 13th minute when Lorenzo Segura slotted a ball by SMCC goal keeper Patrick Duddy (Sedgwick, Maine) to give his team the 1-0 advantage. For the rest of the half, both teams traded scoring opportunities but were unable to capitalize.

The SeaWolves carried the momentum to start the second half when Gradi Lapika (Kinshasa, Congo) scored his second goal of the season on a pass from sophomore Douglas Cloutier (Berwick, Maine) to even the score. On this play, Cloutier recorded his sixth assist of the season and now is tied for first in the conference in this category.

The Clippers reclaimed the lead 10 minutes later on another goal by Segura. The SeaWolves pushed the tempo and finished the match in a more attacking formation in search for an equalizer. Machias scored on a transition goal with one minute remaining in the game to extend their lead to 3-1.

Duddy finished with three saves on six shot attempts.

Head Coach Brian Dougher and the SeaWolves coaching staff named Lapika and junior Jacob Coffey (Lebanon, Maine) as Men of the Match.

The SeaWolves remain as the second team in the North Division, behind Machias, owning a 3-2 YSCC record. SMCC is now 5-3-1 overall and will host another divisional opponent in Unity College on Saturday, Oct. 8 at Wainwright Field. Kickoff is scheduled for 3 p.m.
