BANGOR, Maine – For the second consecutive game, the University of Southern Maine Huskies battled through a pair of overtime periods to earn a draw, this time playing 110 minutes of soccer to a 2-2 result against the Castleton University Spartans in the third game of the 2016 Adidas Cup Challenge hosted by Husson University.
With the draw, USM is now 0-2-2 on the season. Castleton State, which also earned a 1-1 double overtime draw yesterday, matches the Huskies in the season record at 0-2-2.
Castleton freshman Mason Thompson (Hartland, Vermont) gave the Spartans a 1-0 lead in the 30th minute off of a Nick Kaiafas assist, which stood through the half, before USM rallied in the 55th minute to tie the score up at one goal each. Husky sophomore Hany Ramadan (Portland, Maine/Deering) took the feed from classmate Julian Zepeda (Dover-Foxcroft, Maine/Foxcroft Academy). Just seconds later, USM scored its second goal of the game as junior Charlie Mull (Portland, Maine/Cheverus) completed the assist from sophomore Taylor Wilbur (Manchester, Maine/Maranacook) to put the Huskies’ ahead 2-1.
Castleton forced the overtime action in the 61st minute when freshman Colby Gay (Milton, Vermont) knocked in a pass from sophomore Cameron Rossi Crete (Barre, Vermont/Spaulding). After the Gay goal, neither team was able to find the back of the next in regulation, sending the game into overtime.
Castleton controlled the ball in the overtime periods, outshooting USM 5-2 in the first overtime and 6-0 in the second, but Husky goalkeeper Simon Hulbert (Bar Harbor, Maine) kept the Spartans off of the board making five saves.
Hulbert entered the game in the second half to relieve starter Mull. Mull finished with four saves and one goal against in 45 minutes. Hulbert made nine saves in 65 minutes with one goal against. Castleton goalkeeper junior Aaron Parker (Windsor, Vermont/Hartford) made six saves.
Southern Maine returns to action on Tuesday (4:30 p.m.) when it hosts Bowdoin in non-conference action. Castleton hosts Keene State in a non-conference game on Wednesday (7:00 p.m.).
