Rhode Island College Men's college basketball 61 vs Southern Maine 56

PROVIDENCE, RI – The Rhode Island College shot 50.0 percent (11-for-22) from the field in the second half, including a 5-for-8 mark from three-point range to rally from an eight point second half deficit and defeat the University of Southern Maine Huskies 61-56 in a Little East Conference men’s basketball game Saturday afternoon at The Murray Center.

Adham Floyd scored 13 points to lead three players in double figures for RIC, adding nine rebounds and two blocked shots. Justin Campbell and Grant Gillis each scored 12 points, while Gillis completed the double-double with 10 rebounds, including seven offensive boards. CJ Donaldson and Malcolm Smith each scored seven points.

Senior Christian McCue (Hampden, Maine/Hampden Academy) led all scorers with 18 points, four rebounds, three assists and a pair of steals. Freshman DJ Anderson (Houston, Texas/Davis) added 16 points, while senior Donne Agossou (Auburn, Maine/Lewiston) added 10 points on 5-for-12 shooting. Junior Grayson Waterman (Berwick, Maine/Noble) had nine points off of the bench for the Huskies.

Led by nine first-half points from Anderson, the Huskies built a 27-21 lead at the break. USM stayed in front of the Anchormen in the second half, and led by nine, 37-29, with 13:41 left on the clock after a steal and an assist from Ian Nagle that led to a layup from Agossou. After the Agossou layup, however, RIC rallied to knot the score up at 40 with an 11-3 run spanning the next five minutes of play. RIC pulled even with USM on a jumper from Mike Valelli with 8:09 on the clock.

Both teams battled back and forth and USM took a slim 46-45 lead on one-of-two free throws from Sean Jany (Westbrook, Maine), before Adham canned a three to give RIC its first lead since the seven-minute mark of the first half, 48-46, with 6:06 on the clock. The game stayed closely contested, and Waterman had USM within a bucket of RIC, 51-49, with 3:44 to play with one of two free throws, but the Anchormen used a 6-0 over the next 1:20 to lead 57-49 with 1:28 to play. The Huskies continued to battle with a three from McCue,a layup from Anderson, and a steal and two free throws from McCue for a 7-0 spurt to trail 57- with less than 30 seconds to go, but RIC closed out the game 4-for-4 from the free throw line, and USM missed on its final possession for the final.

The loss stops Southern Maine’s three-game win streak, and drops its record to 5-18 overall, and 3-9 in the Little East. Rhode Island College improves to 6-16 overall and 3-8 in the Little East.

Southern Maine hosts UMass Boston (7:30 pm) in the second game of a Little East Conference doubleheader. It is the Huskies’ final regular season home game of the season before the LEC tournament.
