BANGOR, Maine – Husson University and University of Southern Maine (USM) men’s soccer game ended in a 1-1 double-overtime draw on Friday evening at Boucher Field on day one of the 5th Annual Adidas Challenge Cup.
After a scoreless first half, Southern Maine (0-2-1) was awarded a corner kick in the 57th minute and Qutaiba Hassoon found Christopher Pepin for a 1-0 lead.
The Huskies remained in front of Husson (0-2-1) over the next 20 minutes before Nick Whitehead found the back of the net in the 80th minute on an assist from Josh Bean. With the score tied at one all and with just over 10 minutes remaining in regulation neither team could capitalize, forcing overtime.
In the first overtime period, both teams each registered two shots a piece with USM’s goalkeeper Simon Hulbert and Husson’s goalkeeper Cody Gross each making a stop. In the second extra period, the Eagles held a 5-1 advantage in shots, but both teams’ defenses and held strong to preserve the tie.
The Eagles’ back line was solid as Gross finished with ten saves, while Nic Pare, Gage Kennedy and Bobby St. Hilaire all played a strong line defense over the duration of the game.
Whitehead led the Eagles with five shots, four of which were on goal. Ian Lee registered four with two on goal. Bean tallied a shot of his own to go along with his 26th career assist to move into sole possession of 11th place all-time.
“I thought the lads responded well after last weekend,” said Husson head coach Gavin Penny. “We certainly showed a lot more passion and great spirit to get back in the game after going one nil down. But it was a game of chances and unfortunately we didn’t take ours tonight which cost us two points.”
For the Huskies Austin Farwell and Nicholas Jordan both had two shots, both of which were on goal. Hulbert recorded 12 saves off 13 shots.
In the early game of the tournament, Castleton and Saint Joseph’s played to a 1-1 draw.
The Spartans will face Southern Maine at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, while the Eagles take on Saint Joseph’s (Maine) at 4:30 p.m. on day two of the 5th Annual Adidas Challenge Cup.
