BIDDEFORD, Maine — Nicole Matarozzo scored three times to power the University of New England Nor’easters to a 7-1 triumph over Salve Regina University in a Commonwealth Coast Conference match Saturday on Senior Day at the Big Blue Turf.
With the win the Nor’easters (15-2, 10-0 CCC) clinch their fourth consecutive CCC regular-season title. The setback drops Salve Regina to 8-8 overall, 4-6 in conference play.
Vonde Saunders added a pair goals to give her eight in the last five matches, while Kendra MacDonald and Brenna Sicard had one apiece for the Nor’easters.
UNE got off to a quick start, tallying three times in the initial 15 minutes of the match to seize control. Saunders sandwiched markers around one by Matarozzo to give the Nor’easters a 3-0 advantage.
Matarozzo would score her second of the afternoon in the 27th minute before Erin Gendreau got the Seahawks on the scoreboard with 4:49 remaining in the frame.
After intermission it was MacDonald, Matarozzo and Sicard completing the scoring for UNE.
Saunders and Hannah Buckley contributed two assists apiece for the Nor’easters, who held a commanding 32-7 advantage in shots. Goalkeeper Holly Smith recorded the win with five saves.
