GORHAM, Maine — Sophomore Cody Braga (Middleboro, Mass.) scored the game-tying goal with 43.4 seconds remaining in regulation as the University of Southern Maine Huskies came from behind to play a 3-3 overtime tie with the Saint Anselm College Hawks in non-conference men’s college hockey action Saturday at the USM Ice Arena.
The tie was the second straight for the Huskies (1-7-3) who rallied in the late stages to tie New England College 2-2 Friday evening. The Hawks (5-5-1) went 1-0-1 on the weekend having beaten Franklin Pierce University on Friday.
Saint Anselm snapped a 2-2 deadlock at 18:18 of the third period when rookie Alec Andreucci (Guilford, Conn.) scored his second goal of the game redirecting a pass from senior Jon Pallota (Leominster, Mass.) by USM rookie goaltender Anthony D’Aloisio (Frisco, Texas).
Southern Maine took its timeout after getting a faceoff in the Saint Anselm end with 1:22 to play, and lifted D’Aloisio for the extra skater. With the seconds ticking down, sophomore Brendan Murphy (St. Peters, Mo.) and rookie Michael Taormina (Plymouth, Mass.) were stopped by Saint Anselm junior goalie Colin Soucy (North Andover, Mass.), but Braga was in the right place at the right time to knock in the Huskies’ third attempt.
The Hawks had the only two shots on goal in the five-minute extra session, but D’Aloisio was able to handle both.
After a scoreless first period that saw Soucy stop 15 shots, USM took a 1-0 lead as junior Parker Sanderson (Bangor, Maine) scored the first of his two power-play goals in the period off a feed from Braga
Saint Anselm tied the game on Andreucci’s first goal at 12:28 as he converted a pass from rookie Frank Ferrara (Winthrop, Mass.). Classmate Matt Chisholm (Scituate, Mass.) put the Hawks ahead at 14:45 when he changed the direction of an Andreucci shot for a power-play marker.
Sanderson’s second power-play goal of the period, coming with 1.8 seconds to play in the period, tied the game at 2-2 after 40 minutes.
Southern Maine finished the game with a 33-31 edge in shots on goal and was 2 for 4 on the power play. Saint Anselm went 1 for 4 with the extra skater. D’Aloisio made 28 saves while Soucy stopped 30 shots.
The Huskies closes their first-semester schedule on Tuesday (7:00 p.m.) hosting Bowdoin College. Saint Anselm travels to Plymouth State University next Saturday (6:00 p.m.) to finish the first half of its 2017-18 schedule.
