ORONO, Maine — The University of Maine women’s soccer team dropped their final regular season home game of the 2019 season to UMBC, 2-1, on Sunday afternoon.
First Goal (Maine 1-0): Nicole Bailey, on senior day, scored the first goal of the America East contest. Jane Stevens had her shot saved by the UMBC goalkeeper. Bailey corralled the save and found the back of the net less than one minute into the contest.
Second Goal (1-1): Kira Kutzinski did all she could to keep Laura Ventura from scoring the game tying goal. Ventura had her first shot saved but a streaking Kutzinski. The ball took a UMBC bounce directly to Ventura as she tied at game at one goal apiece.
Third Goal (UMBC 2-1): 00:25 later, Danielle Fuentes sent a perfect through ball to Christina Corbi. Corbi turned and fired a rocket into the upper 90. It was a lead the Retrievers would not relent.
Despite sending all 11 players to their offensive side of the field, Maine was unable to find a game tying goal as they dropped their final home game of the 2019 season.
Shots/Keepers: Maine held a 18-to-9 in shots, also winning the corner kick battle, 4-2.
Keeper Kira Kutzinski made three saves in goal, as her Retriever counterpart, Jade Wilkins, tallied 10.
Next: The Black Bears will return to the field Sunday, October 27th for their final regular season. Kick-off at UAlbany is scheduled for 12:00 pm.
