ORONO, Maine — Maine field hockey defeated Sacred Heart University Sunday afternoon 6-1 at the Maine Field Hockey Complex. Six different scorers propelled the Black Bears to a 2-0 start on the season. Sacred Heart falls to 0-2 on the year.
Emily Corbett started in goal for the Black Bears and Emily Degennaro started in goal for the Pioneers.
Maine opened with the first goal of the game two minutes in from Libby Riedl, her third of the year, to take and early 1-0 advantage.
Twenty minutes into the first half, Lydia Gavner scored off of a pass from Danielle Aviani to give the Black Bears a 2-0 lead. One minute later, Riley Field scored her first career goal with the Black Bears to increase their margin to 3-0. Maine outshot Sacred Heart 8-0 in the first half.
Emma Cochran started in goal for the Black Bears.
Casey Crowley scored the sixth goal of the day for Maine which was unassisted to increase their margin to 6-0.
Sacred Heart was able to end the shutout, 58 minutes into the game as Allie Brouhard notched her first goal of the season.
Maine returns to action September 2 as they travel to Hofstra University for a 3:00 p.m. game.
