CASTINE, Maine – Maine Maritime Academy women’s basketball picked up a 67-56 victory over Johnson State College on Saturday afternoon in North Atlantic Conference (NAC) action inside of Smith Gymnasium.
Maine Maritime’s Chloe Smedley (York, Maine) hit two from the line to open up the scoring. The two teams exchanged buckets, but the Badgers never took the lead as the Mariners went on to build as much as a 13-point lead with 5:03 to play in the second quarter. Maine Maritime took a 35-24 advantage into halftime, led by 13 points from Alayne Felix (Mahopac, N.Y.).
The Mariners continued to dominate in the third quarter, leading by 18 early and again to enter the final quarter. The Badgers battled back, outscoring the Mariners 21-14 in the final quarter, but the Mariners hung on for the victory.
Felix and Smedley ended the evening with 14 points each, Smedley added seven rebounds, all defensive, two steals, and an assist and Felix added five rebounds, two steals and an assist. Caitlin Kane (Wilton, Maine) added 10 points, four rebounds, an assist and a steal, off the bench.
Domonique Carter-Stanley led the Badgers with 14 points, three rebounds, two steals, and a block and Kasey DeGreenia tallied a double-double of 12 points, 12 rebounds three assists, and a steal.
The Mariners improve to 7-7 overall and 4-4 in the conference, while the Badgers fall to 6-8 on the season and 3-5 in the NAC. Maine Maritime returns to action next Friday, January 20 at Green Mountain College for a 7:30 p.m., conference matchup.
