FARMINGTON, Maine – The Husson Eagles (14-10) (10-3 NAC) earned a crucial win on the road Saturday afternoon, as they defeated the University of Maine at Farmington Beavers (16-8) (11-2 NAC), 77-71.
The first half was essentially even, with both teams battling it out shot-for-shot. There were 13 total lead changes, and the largest lead for either team was only six points. Justin Thompson, who scored 29 points in last night’s battle against Thomas College, picked up right where he left off, scoring 14 points in the half. After a last-second three-pointer by DJ Bussey, the Eagles trailed by three heading into the locker room, 40-37.
The Beavers increased their lead within the first few minutes of the second half. However, led by Thompson and Bruce St. Peter, the Eagles were able to string together an 8-0 run, and reclaim the lead, 49-46 with 15:43 to go. From here, both teams once again matched one another offensively, until the Eagles managed to extend their lead to six points with just under five minutes remaining. Brett Cunningham took over for the Eagles, scoring 11 of Husson’s final 13 points, including two late free throws that helped seal the victory. The Eagles earned a huge road win, bouncing back nicely after a tough game last night, and defeat UMaine-Farmington, 77-71.
Justin Thompson finished with a game-high 24 points. He also recorded five rebounds and six assists.
Justin Martin finished with a double-double, scoring 12 rebounds and snagging 10 rebounds. Martin now has 13 double-doubles on the season. He snagged his 900th career rebound to become the first player to do so since 1990.
Both DJ Bussey and Bruce St. Peter scored 11 points in the win. Bussey knocked down three 3-pointers, and St. Peter made five of the six shots he took.
Amir Moss finished with a team-leading 22 points. He also had four rebounds and three assists for the Beavers.
Issac Witham was a bright spot for the Beavers, ending the game with 16 points and five assists.
Milani Hicks was only one rebound shy of a double-double, scoring 14 points and pulling down 9 rebounds.
The Eagles play their final regular season game on the road against the Maine Maritime Mariners on Tuesday, February 12th. Tip-off is set for 5:30 PM.
