Gardiner High School received second-half goals minutes, 7 seconds apart from Madelin Walker and Sarah Foust to snap a 1-1 tie and the Tigers survived a late goal by Emlyn Patry to beat York 3-2 in the Class B field hockey state championship game at Deering High School in Portland on Saturday.
Gardiner (17-1) won the program’s first state title since 2009. York (13-4-1) was playing in its sixth straight state final and had won three titles in the previous four years.
Last year, York had its string of three straight state championships snapped by Maine Central Institute of Pittsfield. The Wildcats have played in 10 of the last 11 and 13 of the last 15 state finals.
Bailey Oliver staked York to a 1-0 lead in the first half but Jazmin Clary’s goal off a penalty corner with half a second remaining tied it for the Tigers.
Walker’s penalty stroke goal broke the tie with 15 minutes left in regulation and Foust extended the lead for Gardiner.
Patry scored for York with 7:54 remaining but the Tigers hung on.
Lindsey Bell made 11 saves for Gardiner and Julianna Kiklis had eight stops for York.
