Fitchburg State Men's college basketball 63 at Colby 81

WATERVILLE, Maine — Patrick Stewart scored a game-high 19 points, including 5-for-8 from 3-point range, to help the Colby College men’s basketball team to a convincing 81-63 win over Fitchburg State University in the title game of the Colby Classic on Saturday.

Stewart earned tournament MVP honors after shooting 7-for-11 from the field and adding six rebounds, four assists, and three blocked shots. Tyler Williams, who hit the game-winning shot against Pine Manor on Friday, was named to the all-tournament team. Williams had three assists to finish with nine in the two games and did a good job of breaking pressure.

The Mules led 32-30 at halftime, but Stewart scored 13 points in the second half. Colby, which led 46-35 with 14:15 left in the game, went on a 10-0 scoring run over the next five minutes to pull away for a 56-35 margin. Stewart hit three straight 3-point shots for Colby and first-year Sean Gilmore hit another to put the Mules up 62-39 with 8:49 to play.

The Mules (2-0 overall) received a big effort from Maximilian Steiner, who had a game-high 14 rebounds, 12 points, and five assists. Senior off guard Joe Connelly was 4-for-6 from 3-point range for 14 points. Gilmore added eight points, three assists, and two blocks. Steven Daley was strong on the boards with seven and added six points.

Carlos Bermudez-Glea led Fitchburg (1-2) with 15 points, four steals, and three assists. Joshua Bosworth added 13 points on 5-for-8 shooting, while Jaleel Bell made the all-tournament team with 11 points and three steals. Bell had 44 points in Friday’s win over Regis College.

Colby shot 61.3 percent (19-for-31) in the second half and were 9-for-12 on 3-point shots in the final 20 minutes.
