LEWISTON, Maine — Tyler Rowe scored 19 points, Lee Messier added 17 off the bench and David Labossiere scored 16 points as Connecticut College defeated the Bates College men’s basketball team 73-58 Friday night in Alumni Gym.
The visiting Camels (11-5, 2-3 NESCAC) shot 21-of-25 (.840) from the free-throw line while the host Bobcats (12-5, 3-2 NESCAC) were 8-18 (.444) at the line, comprising the difference in the game.
Bates senior Malcolm Delpeche led the Bobcats with 18 points and 14 rebounds. First-year guard Tom Coyne scored 10 points off the bench. Senior Marcus Delpeche had nine points and seven rebounds, while Jeff Spellman added nine points, four assists and five rebounds off the bench for Bates.
Connecticut College finished the first half with 11 unanswered points, nine of them scored by Messier, including a pair of 3-pointers. Rowe added a layup with 46 seconds left and the Bobcats missed their last six shots from the field in the period, sending the Camels into halftime with a 41-30 lead.
Bates assembled an 11-2 run in the second half, with Coyne scoring eight straight points for the Bobcats including a pair of threes, and a layup by Eli Frater cut hte deficit to 48-45 with12:40 to go in the game.
But Connecticut College responded in kind with a 10-0 run over three minutes, punctuated by Labossiere’s three-point play with 9:18 to go for a 58-45 lead. Bates couldn’t get any closer than within nine points the rest of the way.
