PRESQUE ISLE, ME – The University of Maine at Presque Isle Men’s Basketball team (1-2) picked up their first win of the season in a back and forth affair with the Central Maine Community College Mustangs (6-3) on Wednesday afternoon. The Owls would end the afternoon with a 54-52 win.
The largest lead of the afternoon would be seven points by the Owls, and ten lead changes would keep observers on the edge of their seats throughout. UMPI would hit seven of ten free throws in the first half to give them an advantage early. The Owls would hold that seven point lead with two minutes to go in the first half, but Rob Skinner would hit two three-point baskets to pull the Mustangs to within one point at intermission.
The two teams seemed evenly matched to start off the second half, and the Mustangs would grab the lead with fifteen minutes left in the game. After multiple ties the Owls would finally grab the lead again at the 9:25mark. After exchanging the lead multiple times, two Kristijan Gavrilovski free throws would give UMPI a 45-44 lead with 4:51 remaining.
It would be a lead the Owls would not surrender. Missed free throws would give CMCC a chance down the stretch as the Owls would go five for ten from the charity stripe in that last stretch. Pietro Badalassi would threaten the lead when he would get fouled laying in a basket. Badalassi would connect on the free throw and the Mustangs would trail by just one with 2:41 remaining.
CMCC would not be able to capitalize, however as their lone field goal in the waning moments of the contest was a buzzer beating three that would have no effect on the outcome, and the Owls would win the first of their young season by a score of 54-52.
Kevin Collins would score 17 and grab nine rebounds as the leading scorer in the game. Jordan Cook would add eight points, while Kim Collins would score seven.
