WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — Junior Taylor Lough and sophomore Grace Fitzgerald scored goals but the Bates field hockey team fell 3-2 on the road to number 12 nationally ranked Williams Sunday morning.
Bates (3-4, 1-3 NESCAC) got outshot 20-9 on the day. All four of the Bobcats’ losses have been by one goal and to teams ranked in the top 15 in the nation.
Lough (Little Compton, R.I.) scored her team-leading fifth goal of the season in the 20th minute of action on an assist from junior captain Jessie Moriarty (Springfield, Mass.) to tie the game at one.
But the Ephs (5-2, 3-2 NESCAC) took the lead for good in the 29th minute when Simone Veale connected with Molly Lohss for the go-ahead score.
NESCAC scoring leader Libby Dolan lived up to her reputation by scoring a pair of goals for the Ephs on Sunday. Her first score came on an assist from Alex Bennett in the 17th minute to give Williams a 1-0 lead. Then she added another goal in the 50th minute on another assist from Bennett to extend the Ephs’ edge to 3-1.
The Bobcats added a goal at the end of the game. Fitzgerald (Larchmont, N.Y.) took a penalty corner in the 70th minute. Senior Caroline O’Reilly (Longmeadow, Mass.) had her shot stopped by Ephs keeper Abby Lloyd but the Bobcats kept the ball in the offensive zone and Fitzgerald found the back of the net for the second goal of her career.
Bates is back in action Saturday at 11:00 a.m. when the Bobcats host Trinity.
