MEDFORD, Mass. — First-year pitcher Kirsten Pelletier (Sidney, Maine) allowed only five baserunners to NESCAC East Division powerhouse Tufts University, but she was outdueled by Allison Tilton’s complete-game effort as the host Jumbos defeated the Bates softball team 2-1 on Sunday.

Pelletier (3-4) gave up two runs on five hits with no walks over her six innings, collecting five strikeouts along the way. Tilton (3-4) scattered six Bates hits and two walks over seven innings, striking out eight batters.

Tufts (13-5, 4-0 NESCAC East) did all of its damage in the third, following back-to-back 1-2-3 innings for Pelletier in the first and second. Sarah Finnigan doubled to left center to lead off the inning, and Carrie Copacino followed with a one-out bunt single. With runners on second and third, Samantha Siciliano singled to center field to score Finnigan and Copacino. Siciliano was thrown out trying to steal second base by Bates junior catcher Tori Fitzgerald (Holliston, Mass.) and Pelletier got out of the inning with a strikeout.

Bates (5-7, 0-4 NESCAC East) got a run back in the fifth. Sophomore Mimi Crowley (Barnstable, Mass.), a day after hitting her first career home run, led off with a single to center and made it to second on a wild pitch. Sophomore Sam Fellers (Mendham, N.J.) then delivered a pinch-hit single to center, advancing Crowley to third. With two outs, first-year Julia Panepinto (Buffalo, N.Y.) singled to right to score Crowley.

Six Bobcats totaled one hit apiece in the game, including a double by senior Maddie Inlow (Falmouth, Maine). First-years Julia Treadwell (Falmouth, Maine) and India Woolmington (New York, N.Y.) also did, with both Panepinto and Treadwell also drawing walks.
