NEW LONDON, Conn. — Goals by Emily Gianunzio, Jessie Moriarty and Caroline O’Reilly gave the Bates field hockey team a 3-0 lead after 32 minutes, as the Bobcats rolled to a 3-1 NESCAC victory at Connecticut College on Saturday afternoon.
Bates (4-5, 2-4 NESCAC) snapped a two-game skid in conference play with the victory.
The host Camels (3-8, 1-7 NESCAC) outshot the Bobcats by a 17-14 margin and had a 5-4 edge in penalty corners, but Bates was more accurate, with an 8-6 difference in shots on goal.
Gianunzio (Darien, Conn.) scored her first collegiate goal to put Bates in the lead in the ninth minute of the game. The first-year forward split the Camel defense and dribbled around goalkeeper Andi McGraw on the play.
Moriarty (Springfield, Mass.) added a second unassisted goal in the 21st minute, the junior’s second tally of the season, as her shot was redirected off a defender’s stick for a 2-0 Bates lead.
O’Reilly (Longmeadow, Mass.), a senior midfielder, scored for the second time this season and the fifth in her career in the 32nd minute, banging in a short pass across the goal from junior inner Emma Patterson (Denver, Colo.) for the 3-0 lead.
Bates surrendered Connecticut College’s lone goal in the 64th minute, as Enya McGarry’s short pass to Jamie Navoni at the top of the circle became Navoni’s fifth goal of the year.
Bates junior Adelae Durand (Cumberland, R.I.) started in goal and shut out the Camels over 40 minutes, making two saves. Sophomore Alyssa Souza (Scarborough, Maine) allowed one goal and made three saves in 30 minutes of action.
Bates will next play host to No. 2 nationally ranked Babson in a non-conference game Tuesday at 5pm.
