At Hampden senior guard Denae Johnson ran the offense and sparked a trio of Rams in double figures as Bangor downed Hampden 56-26 in a Class A girls basketball season opener at the new Hampden Academy gym.
Johnson finished with a 15 points, but 6-foot-2 sophomore dynamos Cordelia Stewart and Mary Butler paced the Rams’ offense with 18 and 16 points, respectively.
Laura Marquis led the Broncos with seven points, and Kayla Gagner posted five.
The Rams got a quick basket from Jordan Seekins just 16 seconds into the game and never trailed.
Bangor pulled out to a 7-0 lead before Casey Black put Hampden on the board with a free throw. The Rams scored the next seven again, and led 14-4 at the end of the first quarter.
After a better start by the Broncos in the second quarter to cut the gap to 14-8, Bangor scored 27 points in a row over the rest of the second quarter and half of the third to put the game out of reach at 41-8.
Hampden started finding its range on jumpers in the fourth quarter, but the baskets were mostly confidence builders at that point.
