Are you a farmer or food producer interested in selling your products to local schools?
As part of its Downeast Farm to School Initiative, Healthy Acadia is currently updating its “Downeast Directory of Producers” for the 2013 season. Healthy Acadia will send the directory to school food service staff across Hancock and Washington Counties to help schools locate and purchase fresh local food to serve in the cafeteria. Food producers listed in the directory will have more opportunities to sell to local schools, benefiting the health of school children and the local food economy.
Healthy Acadia’s “Downeast Directory of Producers” has helped dozens of schools find local food to purchase throughout the season. Each fall, schools also serve a Maine Harvest Lunch where they purchase and highlight locally grown food. If you are a farm or other food producer in Hancock or Washington County, and you are interested in being listed in the Directory at no cost, please call or email Nikki Fox at Healthy Acadia (288-5331; firstname.lastname@example.org).
Healthy Acadia will send food producers a short survey to create the listing, as well as a “Producers Guide for Selling to Schools” to help producers reach out to schools. The Producers Guide lists schools in each county, along with contact information for their cooks and food service directors.
Healthy Acadia’s Downeast Farm to School Initiative is generously supported by The Bingham Program, C.F. Adams Charitable Trust, U.S. CDC, Maine Community Foundation, Polly & John Guth, and USDA SARE.
Healthy Acadia is a community health coalition that has been working across the region for the past 12 years. Healthy Acadia serves as the Healthy Maine Partnership (HMP) for Hancock County, coordinating essential public health services. The coalition creates lasting improvements to the health of our communities across Downeast Acadia by connecting individuals with health supports, building partnerships, coordinating education and prevention services, and improving policies and environments.
