Each year the MDI Y Sharks Swim Team members host an Aquathon in support of the program. Coach Willis and his 5th grade team members are urging community members to dive into ‘shark-infested waters’ and help raise money for the team. The Aquathon is a pledge event where participants swim laps to help keep the cost of the program low, and to fund scholarships to children who could otherwise not afford to participate. Last year’s event raised $25,000.
If a community member raises $25 or more he or she will receive a treasured ‘I Survived Shark Infested Waters’ t-shirt. Other prizes are available for participants who raise larger sums of money. Bar Harbor resident Kim Chapman has been swimming the Aquathon for years. She says, “Swimming is a lifelong sport that benefits young and old alike. I swim laps to support the kids, the team and the aquatics program in general.”
The event will be held at the MDI Y pool on February 3rd (Super Bowl Sunday) from 7:30am – 1:30pm. Each swimmer has 1.5 hours to complete their laps up to a 200-lap maximum. Swim team members have each been given realistic goals by the coaching staff that shows how many laps each swimmer will try to complete in the allotted time. Participants who cannot make it at that time are welcome to do their laps during the many lap swims held at the Y pool until February 17th. Donations can either be for a set amount or a pledge per lap.
Last season, the Sharks Swim Team placed third at the Maine YMCA State Meet and fourth at the Maine Winter Championships. With the support of the island businesses and community members, the Sharks have been a valuable asset to the youth of the island for the past 40 years.
