Award-winning jazz guitarist Gilad Hekselman and his jazz quartet will deliver an evening full of smooth sounds live on stage at the Strand Theatre in Rockland on Saturday, June 15 at 7pm. The quartet features Mark Turner (tenor sax), Joe Martin (bass), Marcus Gilmore (drums) and Gilad Hekselman (guitar and composition).

Hekselman has been developing a reputation as one of the most promising guitarists in New York since his arrival in 2004. In only a few years this native Israeli has shared the stage with some of the greatest artists in the New York jazz scene including Chris Potter, Mark Turner, John Scofield, Anat Cohen, Ari Hoenig, Esperanza Spalding, Sam Yahel, Jeff Ballard, Gretchen Parlato, Avishai Cohen, Jeff ‘Tain’ Watts, Tigran Hamasyan, Aaron Parks and Greg Hutchinson.

The quartet has toured Switzerland, Japan, Scotland, Canada, Norway, Hungary, and Israel, to rave reviews, and has been featured at world-famous jazz festivals such as Montreux JF, Duke Ellington JF, San Francisco JF and Tel Aviv JF.

The quartet will perform an afternoon concert on June 15th, as well, for the inmates of the Maine State Prison as part of our Community Engagement program.

Winner of the 2005 Gibson Montreux International Guitar Competition, “Mr. Hekselman has set himself roughly up in the line with Pat Metheny and Kurt Rosenwinkel, with a warm and clean guitar tone, clear articulation, crazily extended improvisational ideas, speed when he needs it and an advanced understanding of harmony,” said the New York Times.T

The quartet’s recent album, Hearts Wide Open (2011) received praise globally and made New York Times, Amazon, and iTunes “Best of 2012” lists.

The performance is 75 minutes, with open seating and no intermission, on Saturday, June 15, 2013, 7 p.m. at the Strand Theatre, Rockland. Tickets: $35; Ages 21-35, $25: Under 21, $10. Purchase online at or in Rockport at Bay Chamber Concerts offices, Shepherd Block building, or by phone, 207-236-2823, or at the Strand Theatre box office, starting one hour before the event. Bay Chamber Concerts presents music year-round at a variety of venues in Midcoast Maine.
