Four accomplished artists will present on canvas and paper their mindful interpretations of water and earth as the featured artists at Art Space Gallery in Rockland for the month of June. An opening reception is scheduled for Friday, June 7, from 5:00 to 8:00 pm.
Bold and colorful, paintings by Hannah Nelsbach invariably bring smiles to peoples’ faces. Nelsbach’s paintings are fancifully imaginative and often are more textural than paintings by other artists. Hannah describes her new work as “born again”, where the paper, having begun in the form of a tree, now gives birth to nature once more by being home to a new life, the nature she paints for us to enjoy in the form of art.
Using almost 25 years of experience as a master goldsmith, Susan Lewis Baines has refocused her artistic eye and energy into painting. Susan relishes the freedom that blind contour drawing affords her as compared to the controlled work of fine goldsmithing. Her ink and watercolors will be displayed at the gallery along with the fine jewelry for which she is recognized.
Janalee Welch, a new cooperative member of Art Space this year, is primarily known for her pastels, rich in color and striking contrast. An award winning artist who has exhibited extensively in juried exhibitions in Maine, Janalee’s aim is to simplify the landscape to its bare essence, then translate that vision into art.
Founded on a desire to have people notice what has always been before their eyes yet somehow escaped their attention, the photography of Joan Wright abstracts the familiar by capturing the distortions and reflections naturally created by the interplay between water and objects, like rocks or boats. Looking at Joan’s artwork, viewers become transfixed the way one does when gazing down at a boat’s hull lolling up and down with the gentle harbor waves.
The balance of Art Space Gallery displays works by 15 other artists, adorning the walls in two additional rooms and a hallway. Various forms of visual arts are exhibited. Art Space is located at 342 Main Street in Rockland, directly across the street from the Strand Theatre. Bring a friend!
