PITTSFIELD, Maine — Three local girls presented Sebasticook Valley Health’s Women’s Health Center with money on Nov. 7 they had raised on their own during October, which was National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Chief Nursing Officer Charles Klein and Director of Women’s Health Jennifer Castonguay accepted a check for $691 from the girls in the lobby of the Women’s Health Center in Pittsfield.
For the third year in a row, the students — Sadie Abbott,12, of Canaan, Olivia Hatch, 11, of Cornville, and Emily Reichenbach,11, of Canaan — wanted to raise money for a worthy cause that would directly benefit local people in need. Coined “Every Penny Counts,” their fundraising efforts garnered a surprising amount of money, which was double the amount raised last year.
“Think of what $600 would buy children your age,” remarked Klein during the formal presentation, “and then consider how many people in our community who will benefit from the money you’ve given: these dollars will save lives, lessen patient fears, and empower women to take control of their health.”
The sixth-graders raised money by selling pink ribbon items during October and placing change jars in various stores throughout Canaan. Some of their teachers and friends at Canaan Elementary School often gave money randomly, which the girls said was a big surprise to them, according to a press release.
Every year, SVH Women’s Health coordinates various breast cancer awareness activities in the community and uses the proceeds to provide free breast health services for under-insured and uninsured women who come to SVH for care. Throughout the year, Women’s Health holds bake sales and wear jeans days; in August, Women’s Health holds popular duck races at Manson Park in Pittsfield, and in October, they hold the Breast Cancer Awareness Walk, which will be celebrating its twentieth year in 2014.
