Last Civil War cannon firing of the year at Fort Knox

Rockland Parks and Recreation Director Rene Dorr (left) was the guest speaker at the Oct. 17 Kiwanis Club meeting held in the golf clubhouse at the Samoset Resort. Dorr gave a presentation which included a video that demonstrated the need for money to correct moisture and water infiltration, mold remediation, and other repairs and improvements at the historic building. Dorr discussed the Rockland referendum which would give the city authority to borrow up to $675,000 for the repairs. Dorr receives a Kiwanis coffee mug from Rockland Kiwanis president Janet Page (right).

Five Rotary clubs from midcoast Maine kicked off Rotary International's End Polio Now Campaign recently with a marathon walk from Belfast to Rockland. Approximately 100 Rotarians and their families raised nearly $10,000 for the cause. Their contribution will be matched by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation with a grant of up to $350 million. Over the past 20 years, Rotary has raised more than $1 billion for End Polio Now. Belfast, Camden, Rockland, West Bay and the Camden Hills Interact clubs participated in the walk.
