WISCASSET — Lincoln County Regional Planning Commission, in partnership with the Wiscasset Area Chamber and the Maine Office of the Small Business Administration, is presenting a workshop on “Finding, Hiring and Retaining Quality Employees” at 8 a.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 15 at the LCRPC office, 297 Bath Roadc.

This free workshop is designed to help small businesses find the right people for their businesses, and how to keep them in this tight labor market.

Presented by Mary J. LaFontaine, regional director for the Maine Department of Labor and Bill Card, economic development specialist for the U.S. Small Business Administration, the workshop will provide specifics on how to identify prospective employees, how to make the best hiring decisions for your company and how to get employees to maximize their value to your firm.

LaFontaine and Card work with small businesses every day. LaFontaine has 26 years of experience in the private and public sectors, including over 15 years with Maine Department of Labor. She is currently the regional director of the state’s Southern CareerCenters. In addition to her MDOL position, she teaches at USM-LAC and serves on several boards including the Central Maine Human Resource Association and the Lewiston Auburn Economic Growth Council.

She recently served as an Auburn city councilor for two terms. As a councilor, she served on the Auburn School Committee and the Auburn Public Library Board of Trustees. She holds a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point and a Masters in Adult Education from the University of Southern Maine.

Card is an economic development specialist with the U.S. Small Business Administration’s Maine District Office.  He has been with the agency for eight years, focusing on creating high-visibility SBA events, and representing the SBA at events and training workshops in Maine.  Prior to joining the SBA, Card was a regional manager for U.S. Sen. Susan M. Collins, R-Maine for nine years, where he was responsible for creating and facilitating economic development projects in Central Maine.  Prior to joining U.S. Sen. Collins’ staff, Card started and ran his own small business, Title Checks Inc., for 15 years.
