BANGOR — After one year at its new location on 54 Cumberland St. in Bangor, “The Attic” continues to set records in volunteers, customers and profits.
On Wednesday, Jan. 15, the thrift store will show its appreciation with an anniversary celebration from 10 a.m. to noon. Free coffee and donuts will be served, and all are welcome to attend.
Operated by St. Paul the Apostle Parish, all proceeds from “The Attic” benefit All Saints Catholic School in Bangor. The store, which is run entirely by volunteers, reopened last January in the new, much larger location on Cumberland St.
“Our new space is four times as large as our old location and business is booming,” said Matthew Houghton, principal of All Saints Catholic School. “We have extended the days and hours of operation and sales have increased dramatically.”
“The old location was just under 1,000 square feet,” said Donna Greenlaw, a volunteer. “The new location is over 4,000 square feet with high ceilings, natural light, increased parking, and a garage door bay to receive larger items.”
The large space has allowed for new offerings like furniture, bed frames, kitchen items, glassware, and jewelry.
“The inventory is all of excellent quality and is sold to the local community for pennies on the dollar. We felt like there was a need in our community and we wanted to offer that.” said Houghton. “We are excited to celebrate and thank the community and volunteers with treats on Wednesday.”
With nearly 800 followers, “The Attic” Facebook page (www.facebook.com/The-Attic-225196968270266/) frequently posts pictures of new items when they arrive, leading to quick sales and high interest.
The beneficiaries of all that support, both from in the school and the community, are the students of All Saints.
“At All Saints, we know that joy is found by giving, helping, and loving one another,” said Houghton. “The existence of ‘The Attic’ is another great way to teach our students that important lesson.”
“The Attic” accepts donations from the community, including gently-used clothing; belts, shoes, and purses; home décor; toys; quality linens and drapery; housewares; small kitchen appliances; framed art; jewelry; books, both for adults and children; DVDs; sports equipment; and quality, used furniture.
“The Attic” is open weekdays from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. For more information or to explore volunteer opportunities, call 207-945-5523.
