PORTLAND — The 350th anniversary of Eastern Cemetery will be celebrated with a free open house 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 15, with a free open house. Peaks Island stonecutter Matt Barnes of Yankee Slate Cutting will demonstrate the art of carving slate gravestones by hand, using methods of the 1700s. Learn how some of our oldest gravestones were made.
Throughout the open house, there will be free tours and trained volunteers will demonstrate their conservation methods for repairing and restoring gravestones.
Tours start at the gate to Eastern Cemetery at 224 Congress St. Visit SpiritsAlive.org/tours for information. Event sponsored by Spirits Alive, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to the preservation of historic Eastern Cemetery. Event is free and donations are gratefully accepted.
