ROCKPORT — The Maine Ocean School is slated to open this September and the Maine Ocean School Foundation will be hosting a first Annual Captains’ Dinner at the Samoset Resort in Rockport on August 10, 2018.
The new Maine Ocean School is the first public magnet school in Maine dedicated to students who hope to earn their living in the maritime economy. Because the concept is “hands on, minds on” the education of the students will take place not only in the classroom but on the water, in the lab and in various placements in the maritime economy such as aquaculture, boatbuilding, marina management, etc. This will require a substantial amount of money from private support to afford the opportunities needed to meet the educational standards of the curriculum. The Maine Ocean School Foundation will be working to supplement the basic funding from the state.
Maine Ocean School Foundation’s first major fundraiser will be the Captains’ Dinner and there are a few tickets left for Friday evening August 10th at the Samoset Resort after the Maine Boats and Harbors Show in Rockland that day. People from the maritime community are strongly urged to come to this dinner, learn about the exciting program planned for the Maine Ocean School, and learn how they might support the school as it prepares workers for careers in the maritime economy. For more information and tickets please call James Gillway, the Foundation Chair at 323-3250
