BELFAST — On Friday July 13, a variety of gardens, from formal perennial beds to woodland assemblages, can be seen at Penobscot Shores, a bayfront community of waterfront cottages and apartments.

“We have something blooming all the time here,” notes Marketing and Sales Director Steve Bowler, “and we’re pleased to have our grounds part of this year’s Belfast Garden Club’s annual Open Garden Days.”

Visitors can start their tour at the Ocean House where refreshments will be served. Maps and signage will help guide them to see several private gardens by residents’ cottages, perennial beds, raised beds for vegetables and herbs, wildflower meadows and two bee hives—built and painted in part by community residents.

Bowler credits a program led by bee expert Amy Campbell with the community’s strong interest in supporting pollinators. “She really inspired us,” Bowler says, prompting Penobscot Shores to install mason bee hives and recently honeybee hives. Residents pushed the community to stop chemical use on the lawns and gardens and to mow less. Three years ago, they worked with volunteers from the Belfast Bay Watershed Coalition to plant 400 wildflower plugs.

Visitors can see Penobscot Shores on Friday July 13 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., rain or shine. A $5 donation per visitor helps the Belfast Garden Club (belfastgardenclub.org) provide Waldo County students with scholarships for agricultural or horticultural education.

Penobscot Shores is on Shoreland Drive, off Route 1, just south of the by-pass into downtown Belfast (across from the Irving gas station).
