LINCOLN– The Town of Lincoln invites you to join us as we pay tribute to Congressional Medal of Honor recipient and Lincoln  native, MSG Gary Gordon. On June 30, we will be honoring his life and ultimate sacrifice with a whole day filled with patriotic events dedicated to him.

This year marks the 25th anniversary of his heroic death in the 1993 Battle of Mogadishu, or the Day of The Rangers, which was part of Operation Gothic Serpent in Somalia. The events of that day and MSG Gary Gordon’s heroic ultimate sacrifice were immortalized in the movie “Black Hawk Down”. MSG Gary Gordon has a United States Navy Ship and an elementary school in North Carolina close to Ft. Bragg named after him.

The day starts with the 4th Annual MSG Gary Gordon 5K Run/Walk. The race starts at 9 a.m. If you can’t make it to the race, you can still sign up and run it anywhere in the world because it’s also a virtual race.

The Master Sgt. Gary Gordon Medal of Honor Memorial Fund and Special Forces Charitable Trust are teaming up to raise money for a full-size bronze statue of Gordon on a five-foot granite base featuring Gordon’s Medal of Honor citation, as well as a plaque with the names of the American soldiers killed in 1993 in Somalia. The statue will be at Veterans Park in Lincoln.

Sign up for the race here.

The Sgt. Joel A. House Summer Camp Fund will be holding their 10th Annual Beach n BBQ at Cole’s Landing in Lee benefiting Maine kids attending summer camps of their choice. This takes place from 12-4 p.m.

The American Legion Color Guard will be presenting colors at 4 p.m., at Prince Thomas Park, followed by a performance by Jessie Page, who will sing patriotic songs.

Ernie Smith will then play the bagpipes, which were MSG Gary Gordon’s favorite kind of music.

We are honored that the 195th Army National Guard will be giving a special performance at 6 p.m. at Prince Thomas Park.

Please join us to pay our respects to a true American Hero who made the Ultimate Sacrifice and will forever be remembered for his heroics.
