ISLE AU HAUT — Two young women completed their swim around Isle au Haut this past weekend to promote the island’s lighthouse and raise needed funds for one of the most picturesque lights on the Maine coast.

Year-round Isle residents Molly Siegel and and Allison Richards found an appreciative, cheering crowd of some 40 islanders waiting as they emerged from the water and clambered up the rocky shore in front of the light.

“It was an exciting effort,” said Alison Richardson, “and we’ll never forget coming around the corner of the island and being hit by the rising sun.  One minute we were in total darkness, and then…”

The iconic Isle au Haut lighthouse has been in operation since 1907 and still serves as a navigation guide.  It is owned by the island. Down East has ranked the iconic light 16th best of the 65 coastal lights still in action.

The swimmers goal is to provide enthusiasm to the Light House Committee’s  fundraising efforts and its plans to rehabilitate the light for another century of service.
